San Diego FC returned to MLS Regular Season action with a 1-0 win against LAFC at BMO Stadium, improving to 3-0-1 all-time against LAFC and extending its unbeaten record in the series. The result also marked SDFC’s second consecutive win at BMO Stadium. SDFC finished Leagues Cup play earlier this week before heading north up the interstate for the Southern California rivalry match, with winger Anders Dreyer scoring the game-winner late in the match.
Dreyer converted a penalty kick in the 89th minute to help SDFC earn three points in the Western Conference standings and its first road win since March 7 against Sporting Kansas City. The goal was Dreyer’s eighth of the season and came after LAFC’s Ryan Porteous was called for a handball near the six-yard box following a VAR review. The penalty call came off a corner kick as SDFC continued to pressure the home side late in the match.
SDFC finished the match with 10 men after Dreyer received his second yellow card of the night. SDFC held on to its second-ever win at BMO Stadium behind a standout defensive effort and three saves from goalkeeper CJ Dos Santos, who secured his 12th clean sheet of the season.
With tonight’s result, SDFC is 1-0-1 against LAFC this season, following a 2-2 draw at Snapdragon Stadium on May 2. The Club is now 3-0-1 all-time against LAFC, with its three wins coming in its last three victories over LAFC, including consecutive wins at BMO Stadium.
Up next, SDFC continues on the road when it visits the Portland Timbers on Wednesday, Aug. 19 at Providence Park with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. PT.
