San Diego FC opened its second Leagues Cup campaign with a 3-1 loss against Liga MX powerhouse Club América at Estadio Banorte in its first of three Phase One matches. Defender Luca Bombino scored for SDFC but Brian Rodriguez, Erick Sanchez and Isaias Violante scored for the home team in SDFC’s first-ever match at Estadio Banorte. Tonight’s match was the second Leagues Cup match ever to be played in Mexico and SDFC’s third time playing in this country.

Against Club América tonight, Brian Rodriguez gave the Mexican side the 1-0 lead with a left-footed shot off the right post and into CJ Dos Santos’ net. The home side extended its lead to 2-0 in the 30th minute when Sanchez tapped in a cross by Rodriguez. Rodriguez added another assist on Violante’s goal seconds before halftime for a 3-0 lead for Club América. All three of Club América's scoring plays came off counter attacks and during times that SDFC moved up its lines and pressured and attacked.

SDFC returns to San Diego for back-to-back Leagues Cup matches at Snapdragon Stadium. SDFC will host Club Tijuana on Sunday, Aug. 9, before welcoming Club Puebla to Snapdragon Stadium on Wednesday, Aug. 12. Get tickets for the August 9 match here.
