The passion, the rivalries, and a whole lot of fútbol is coming to San Diego. The biggest stage is coming to North America for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. It’s time to represent your country, wear your colors with pride, and cheer on the world's best. 48 teams. 12 groups. One World Cup champion.
Panama is heading back to the World Cup for just the second time in its history. Known as Los Canaleros (The Canal Men), Panama made its debut in 2018 in Russia, where they faced Belgium, England, and Tunisia in the group stage.
San Diego FC midfielder Aníbal Godoy was part of Panama’s historic 2018 roster that featured in the country’s first-ever World Cup, starting in all three matches. Since then, Godoy has gone on to become the all-time appearance leader for Panama’s senior national team, earning more than 157 caps.
“Since I started playing with the national team, I never imagined I would have so many appearances. I think it’s a big personal achievement, but in the end, team accomplishments are more important.” said Godoy in Spanish. “Qualifying for a World Cup has been the best thing you can experience, and I’m proud to represent my country and compete in any tournament.”
Los Canaleros secured first place in Group A of Concacaf qualifying with 14 points against Guatemala, El Salvador, and Suriname. Panama sealed their spot after defeating El Salvador 3-0 in November 2025, surpassing Suriname in Group A’s table.
After qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, Godoy commemorated the moment with a tattoo of himself on his right shoulder.
“The significance is that [the tattoo] stays marked on my body, and it has the day we qualified for the World Cup. I think it was one of the most beautiful days I’ve ever had, along with qualifying for Russia with the national team so it’s something that will stay with me for life and I’m happy,” said Godoy.
Panama’s official World Cup roster won’t be announced until May 2026, but the matches have been set. Los Canaleros will compete in Group L, opening their World Cup campaign against Ghana on Wednesday, June 17, followed by matches against Croatia on Tuesday, June 23 and England on Saturday, June 27. Finishing in the top two of the Group Stage will determine if they advance to the Round of 32.
Panama returns to the world stage not just to compete, but to go further.
“I think it was incredible because it was the first time Panama went to a World Cup. The first time is always something you enjoy a lot. It stays with you forever, in your memory and the country’s history,” added Godoy. “It was huge for me because it’s coming to the United States, we know we’re here, playing in the league, so there’s something special about it. Personally, I’m focused on making the most of it, and hopefully everything goes well.”
