SDFC HEAD COACH MIKEY VARAS
On tonight’s performance: “Yeah, I think it's a group mentality that we want to score goals, and we want to go after the game. And I think the team, the team, showed that those intentions were strong. And then ultimately, the at the end of the day, it was a pretty inconsistent performance from us, so we just opened the door and rolled the dice a little bit too much in terms of How the result could have gone.”
On what the team can take from tonight going into the next match against Toluca F.C.:
“We made the honest reflection that that tonight was a bit of an inconsistent performance, where we had some really, really good moments, but we had too many individual errors and sloppy moments. So, you take that reflection because you need to, you need to look in the mirror and at the end of the day feel that disappointment. But we had to have a really short memory where we know we're very good team, and it's just about a matter of refocusing ourselves. Get in the shower, let this one go, make the little improvements that we know we can and then from now, from right now to the moment that whistle blows, everybody is just 100-percent focused on preparing the next game.”
On Osvald Søe making his first start tonight:
I think he showed a lot of composure, pretty brave on the ball. And considering has a lot of a lot of minutes, he had a very stable performance. And I think started running out of gas a little bit, just because he hasn't had a lot of minutes. But I think it was really positive.”
SDFC MIDFIELDER ONNI VALAKARI
On the draw feeling more like a loss:
“I feel we were not as clean as we usually are, but we still had chances to win the game, the gold we let in. I think we need to do better, new situations, everybody and like the small mistakes we made today, they just add up, and it kind of changes the flow of the game that we're really good at, usually. But now we have to take a shower, forget this game, learn from this of course, and recover quick, because the next game comes fast, and we have to be ready for that.”
On his performance this season and scoring tonight:
“Yeah, definitely, you always want to get on the score sheet if possible. Anders [Dreyer] was not on the field today, and we shared the penalties with Marco, so I think that was, that was good. But yeah, honestly, I'd rather not score today, and we win the game than for me to score two goals and tie the game. So really disappointing the result. The locker room was really quiet after the game, but we know in in the bad moments and in the good moments, we stick together so we just continue so we have to just keep on working now and recover now and go on to Wednesday.”
On trying to stay focused in this type of game:
“Yeah, good question. I think we had some lack of focus today in some moments that we kind of made easy mistakes like we don't usually make. So, like I said, that adds up and changes the flow of the game that we like to be in control of. So, it's a sum of many different things. Obviously, a lot happens in 90 minutes. I think we played 100 minutes today, so a lot happens in that time. But every moment, you just have to think about the next action and keep on, keep the focus, so you keep the flow on your own side.”
On his goals tonight: “Yeah. The first one, obviously penalty. Had good confidence. I wanted to take the ball, and I'm happy, happy to score that. The second goal, I saw Alex [Mighten]. He's really good in one on one situations. I saw him, he saw me. We had good eye contact, and I'm happy he found me. So, I think a little bit lucky on that goal, it hit somebody, but happy that it went in.”
On what the team can take onto the next Concacaf match:
“I think a lot of unpredictable things can happen in the next game, and we have to be ready for those. I know we're going to Toluca to win the game. That's the mentality that we had in the locker room now. So, we're going to recover now. Everybody has to get ready, and it's going to be a good game on Wednesday.”
