Get To Know Jeppe Tverskov

With a new Club comes a brand-new team with players from all over the world. Leaving Denmark to play in Southern California, midfielder Jeppe Tverskov was named the first-ever captain for San Diego Football Club. Since being named captain, Tverskov has been contributing to leading the team to the post-season.

ā€œIt's been fun, especially the first couple of months was special. I’ve been captain before in my career, but doing it here with a whole new group,ā€ said Tverskov. ā€œIt's also a little bit weird being in the leadership group when you really haven't performed for the team, if you can say that, but it's been a very good journey of course for me, but especially for the team. I think having a team that everybody from the get-go wanting to be here from the first day is unique.ā€

Tverskov and forward Marcus Ingvartsen were both signed back in March 2024 from the Danish Superliga and Right to Dream member Club FC Nordsjaelland. Coming with a familiar face made the experience of starting in a new place easier.

ā€œThat's reassuring and some part at least for outside of the pitch, that you have somebody that can go through all the same things, brought up in kind of the same way in Denmark, but has to go through all the same things here,ā€ explained the captain. ā€œIt's nice, but it's kind of we didn't really know what to expect getting here. We knew a lot of the guys that were involved with everything and the Right to Dream so we were kind of reassured by that, how they wanted to do it. We tried a little bit before. So I think for us, it was also the possibility of seeing if we could implement some of the things that we knew those guys, they wanted to implement here. We would have a good shot at being a good teamā€

Since joining SDFC, Tverskov has started in all 30 matches, contributed two goals and 10 assists. He is currently leading the MLS in touches with 2,839. The captain scored his first goal against Seattle Sounders FC on April 5, 2025.

The midfielder has been kicking a soccer ball since the age of three. Tverskov shared how he and his brother started to play at a young age.

ā€œI think in Europe, you have one main sport, where I think here you have a bunch of sports as I can understand. Like, people play several sports being young. In Denmark, at least, it's, like, its soccer, mainly,ā€ the captain explained. ā€œI think my brother started to play when he was five or six and my parents joined me in a Club as well at three, so quite early, and then it's just been that ever since and the road took me here.ā€

The Danish International’s journey was different than most as he wasn’t a part of an Academy growing up.

ā€œI ended up going a little bit different route than most guys and it ended up being a little bit of a coincidence I got into some of the better teams, but it was at the age of 18-19, which is unusual in Europe, at least with Academies being all the way down to 10-11 and 12, but for me, it's actually been good because I've kind of got the whole experience with Gymnasium,ā€ Tverskov added. ā€œI think you would call it college here. All that fun that you probably would miss out on if you hadn't, if you had gone the other way. So I feel like I've kind of took my own route, but I'm pretty glad for it, because I got the best of both worlds.ā€

Before signing with SDFC, Tverskov made his Superliga debut in 2014 with Randers FC. Two years later, he signed with Odense Boldklub where he registered 232 appearances across all competitions in his seven seasons at the club. In 2023, he transferred to FC Nordsjaelland, where he made 36 appearances across all competitons including in 10 UEFA Europa League matches.

When the midfielder isn’t on the field he can be found with his three-year old daughter, wife, and soon-to-be-born baby. Tverskov and his wife also spend a lot of their time with Ingvarsten and his family.

ā€œI have a little daughter, a three-year old, I have another one on the way, so it's like, we've seen all the playgrounds, first of all. And then we go to coffee shops, we go to cafes, all around the city. We try to see as much of the city as possible,ā€ said Tverskov.

The captain’s daughter is also kicking a soccer ball. Same age as her dad.

ā€œYeah, she is (kicking a soccer ball), but Marcus's kid is, like, kicking a little bit too hard for her, so it's like, sometimes she likes it, sometimes she doesn’t," said the captain. ā€œWe see each other a lot. Like, we have the kids at the same preschool and stuff, so we see each other every day outside also.ā€

Adjusting to San Diego has been quite easy for Tverskov, especially now that he’s been in Southern California for a few months.

ā€œFirst of all, the weather, of course, it’s sunny weather, makes you smile a bit more, I think, especially coming from a country that has a lot of rain as we do,ā€ said the captain. ā€œThat's the first thing, I appreciate that a lot, but I feel like people here have been extremely friendly not only within soccer and football, but also outside and with neighbors, so I feel like people here are extremely friendly, good to chatter, and just very warm in general. So we love that.ā€

Taking it back to the San Diego FC podcast, Ingvartsen and the captain are finally figuring out the coffee in SD since discussing in April.

ā€œWe got Mostra here (at the Sharp HealthCare Performance Center), so now we get very, very good coffee in house, so I would say a lot of our coffee gets drank here and we kind of got a coffee station that people now hang around with at the Clubs. So it's been developing quite quickly since the podcast. But yeah, then you go around. But the thing is in Denmark, like the big thing is hot coffee and here it's so hot. So, kind of switched a little bit to colder beverages and also coffee.ā€

ā€œAs a team, we're very happy with the support we get in general. As I said, it's not only at the stadium, it’s also outside the stadium, like every feedback is so positive, that helps us so much,ā€ said the captain. ā€œI think we know that we are very fortunate to actually be in a city in US with the Supporter Groups (Frontera SD) that's very into soccer or football and we feel it, so we also want to say thank you and appreciate it. Thank you so much.ā€
