Everything You Need to Know About the Concacaf Champions Cup

After finishing first place in the Western Conference of the 2025 MLS season, San Diego FC secured their spot in theĀ 2026Ā Concacaf Champions Cup.Ā Here’sĀ everything you need to know about theĀ 61stĀ editionĀ of theĀ tournament.Ā Ā 

What is the Concacaf Champions Cup?
TheĀ Concacaf Champions CupĀ (formerly Concacaf Champions League)Ā is anĀ internationalĀ tournamentĀ for North America, Central America, and the Caribbean,Ā organized byĀ ConcacafĀ (the Confederation of North, CentralĀ AmericaĀ and Caribbean Association Football).Ā The tournamentĀ featuresĀ 27 Clubs, includingĀ some of the region’s top teams.

Of the 27Ā ClubsĀ participating, only one will be crowned the Confederation’s Club Champion.Ā The winner of the tournament will alsoĀ determineĀ oneĀ of four regional representatives that will qualify for the FIFA Club WorldĀ Cup inĀ 2029Ā andĀ also qualify for the 2026 FIFA Intercontinental Cup.Ā Ā 

How the Tournament Works?

This tournament consists ofĀ directĀ eliminationĀ knockouts playedĀ overĀ five rounds,Ā culminating in a final.Ā The first four stagesĀ (Round One, Round of 16, Quarterfinals, and Semifinals)Ā each consist of home and away play, while theĀ FinalĀ consists of only one match.

22 Clubs areĀ participatingĀ in Round One, including San Diego FC.Ā There will be 11Ā matchups, in a home and away format. The aggregate score winner from each matchup will advance to the Round of 16, joining the five Clubs that were pre-seeded into theĀ Round of 16.Ā 

The Club defeated Pumas UNAM in Round One of the Concacaf Champions Cup, advancing to the Round of 16. SDFC then faced Liga MX’s 12-time champions, Toluca FC, on March 11 at Snapdragon Stadium for Leg One of the Round of 16, earning a 3–2 victory. The Club now prepares to face Toluca at Estadio Nemesio DĆ­ez for Leg Two as SDFC looks to advance to the Quarterfinals.Ā  Fans will be able to tune in from home on ConcacafĀ GO,Ā FS2Ā (FoxĀ Sports),Ā TUDN, orĀ Univision.Ā 

Who is Participating?
SDFCĀ will be joining top teams from North America, Central America, and the Caribbean.Ā The tournamentĀ includesĀ Mexico’s top teams,Ā Club AmĆ©rica, CF Monterrey, and the 2025 Champions Cup title holders Cruz Azul; the 2025 MLS Cup Champions, Inter Miami;Ā the 2025 MLS Supporters’ Shield winner, Philadelphia Union;Ā Costa Rican standouts LDĀ AlajuelenseĀ and CSĀ CartaginĆ©s, and Honduran giants Club Olimpia Deportivo, among others.Ā

When will each Round be played?
Round One Week 1: February 3–5Ā 
Round One Week 2: February 10–12Ā 
Round of 16 First Legs:Ā March 10–12Ā 
Round of 16 Second Legs:Ā March 17–19Ā 
Quarterfinals First Legs:Ā April 7–9Ā 
Quarterfinals Second Legs:Ā April 14–16Ā 
Semifinals First Legs: April 28–30Ā 
Semifinals Second Legs:Ā May 5–7Ā 
Final: Saturday, May 30

What does this mean for SDFC?
If SDFCĀ winsĀ the tournament, the Club would be one of four regional representatives that would qualify for the FIFA Club World Cup in 2029 and also qualify for the 2026 FIFAĀ Intercontinental Cup.Ā In addition to qualifying, SDFC would also receive 10Ā million dollars.Ā Winning the tournament would be a monumental moment for the city of San Diego.Ā Ā
